Grey Bull Shoshone NF Wyoming

Shortly after your clinic, our guides and we will take you through some of the most picturesque areas in New Mexico or Wyoming. As you pack through the beautiful Gila or Shoshone wilderness, we will tell you of the areas' rich histories, the wonderful flora and fauna unique to each forest, as well as pictographs and petrogliphs left behind by the American Indians in their formerly hidden dwellings.

In addition to seeing some of the wonderful sights in the Gila or Shoshone Forests, our packtrips are designed to implement and reinforce the skills learned in the clinic. Emphasis will be placed on practicing Leave No Trace (LNT) camping techniques. Campsite selection, picketing, hobbling, high-lining and the best campsite organization techniques will be reviewed. Participants will be instructed on how and where to select the safest sites for placing pickets and highlines. Training will also include site reclamation and improving the camp area. Additionally, your stock will be taught the skills necessary for safe handling in the backcountry.

In preparation for actual camp setup, there will be discussions on core camp selection and tent placement. Participants can help in setting up the kitchen and cooking area, and all aspects of running an efficient and clean camp will be addressed. Menus and special diet issues focused on during the clinic will be practiced exclusively.

Setting and breaking camp will be discussed and practiced while on the trip to provide experience and promote efficiency. When camp chores are approached in a group effort the work becomes fun and provides time for individuals to hike, fish, and look for birds or the local wildlife. Our goal is to teach you to create an orderly and efficient LNT campsite for you and your stock. Once you can accomplish that, you will have the comfort of knowing that everything is well in hand so that you can relax and enjoy being in the wilderness.
